If you have a short haircut and suddenly want to have gorgeous long hair, hair extensions are your answer.

There are two ways about hair extensions – you can have them done in a hair salon or order clip on hair extensions online. Extensions done in the salon are permanent (from 6 month to a couple years), while clip- ons are perfect if you need long hair for a special occasion.

Clip on hair extensions

You can get clip on extensions online from sites that sell wigs. Most popular are human hair extensions by Raquel Welch and PutonPieces. Clip on extensions package usually includes several wefts that clips to your hair. Two long wefts for the back of your head and several short ones for the sides. With a little bit of practice the extensions are very easy to attach and remove.

As with wigs, you can get human hair extensions or synthetic extensions. High quality synthetic pieces look all right, but to the touch they are not as silky and soft and your real hair. Synthetic extensions also often called “hair pieces”. If you can afford it, human hair clip in extensions are recommended – they are absolutely indistinguishable from real hair, soft to the touch and their life is longer than synthetic ones.

For the hair extensions color matching is very important. It is recommended not to rely on the image you see on your computer screen, because all screens represent colors slightly differently. Most sites offer you an option to buy a color ring with samples of all colors. Some also let you buy a ring and after you select your color, return it and get a refund. This is the safest option – even though getting the color ring takes extra time, you can be sure about the color of your hair extensions.

Salon hair extensions

If you would like to have long hair not for one night out but for the next year or so, it is better to go to a hair extensions artist. Quality salon extensions cost much more, than clip in hair pieces.

Salon hair extensions can also be made from synthetic or real human hair. Frankly, for this type synthetic hair is no good. It might look decent when the artist shows you the hair, but after a month it starts loosing its look.

Human hair used for extensions are also not all of the same quality. Cheapest hair comes from India and other Asian countries, it is thick and originally very dark. If you are a blond and need blond extensions ask the artist if they have European hair – they cost more, but will look better on you.
